Political System

copyright: Cour grand-ducaleThe origins of Luxembourg date back to the year 963. Since the Congress of Vienna in 1815, it has been enjoying the status as Grand Duchy. It became a sovereign and independent State with the Treaty of London, signed on 19 April 1839.

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a constitutional monarchy, with Grand Duke Henri as head of state.

Luxembourg has a parliamentary system of government in which proportional representation maintains a balance between the leading political parties and asks for political consensus, especially in social and economic matters.

There are no states, provinces or departments in the Grand Duchy. Luxembourg is subdivided into 116 communes, each being headed by a mayor.
