.lu addresses among the most secure worldwide
14-01-2010

Visiting a Luxembourg Internet address is as safe as surfing on the Internet gets. This conclusion is drawn from Mapping the Mal Web, the third annual report to analyze the relative risk of top-level domains (TLDs) conducted by security services provider McAfee.

In 2009, the risk to catch a computer virus while checking out a website ending in .lu was a mere 0.2%. Only six other registrations are better ranked than Luxembourg, with the generic TLD .gov (governmental) taking the top spot, followed by .jp (Japan) and .edu (educational).

The 2009 risk ratio worldwide is 5.8%, meaning that 5.8% of all domains tested are considered to be risky. For the region comprising Europe, Middle East and Africa, the ratio is 2.2%.

The latest ranking features 104 country and generic TLDs.
